I found some neat pictures of shrines in jars (like a spiritual ecosystem, as one comment says) and I thought they would be a great idea for those of us who are short on space and/or cash:

Has anyone made anything like this before?

I have a salsa jar that's big enough to use for a craft like this, so I think I'll try it and post some pictures when I'm finished.

Perhaps I'm jaded but this is no different than the many ships in a bottle I made in my youth and teens in the late 60's and early 70's. We made terrariums and solariums in all assorted sizes of bottles or panarama's and Diarama's in larger bottles and jugs.

Far from being something new it just seems like a rediscovery of something old and trying to pass it off as a new creation. Though I admit a panarama or diarama to ones gods / goddesses is probably a better use than the old horror movie ones we made back in the day.

Lots of things are rediscovered, tweaked or built upon.

To be fair I don't see anyone anywhere making any claims of originality regarding the idea. In fact in one of the originally linked images/blogs the author notes that she was inspired after seeing similar things in boutiques.

So, basically, you're jumping on nothing.

I'm not jumping on anything, I just find it amusing in a pathetic sort of way. It's nothing new as a concept or the selection and / or application of material to be enclosed within the container. For me it's just a reminder of childhood things and things we made and played with.

Heck even the concept and usage is nothing I was not introduced to in my middle school (6 - 8th grade (figure 1968 - 1971) art classes or re-introduced to in later art classes or folk art I encountered all about the world.

If anything its a sign of the reduction in general education and cultural exposure that once filled our school systems.

I think the whole point of the post was not "Hey, this is something new", but "Hey, if you're short on space".

This seems like a good idea if you're on the road as well as lacking space. Creative and cute! Spoil us with many pictures after you make it!

Nope, I find it a bit amusing and somewhat pathetic when I see so many in the pagan fold speak on about being ecclectic and taking what they only want then seeing it was something we had years ago. Yet it's so much about individual today that its amusing when the answer is something that in mosty instances has always been right before thier eyes. But then again that was always part of the advantage of groups and being initiated or brough up in family traditions.
