I agree, it is crossing a line and disrespectful.  Worse though, is someone I work with named her son Artemis...After the goddess...That is just all kinds of wrong.

I don't really see how it's disrespectful, but I was named after a god (Greek) and my middle name means 'like god', and my chosen religious name I got from the goddess Aine, so... My birth named seemed to help out quite a bit in my religious life before I shifted it. Never had any issues, except with people not knowing how to pronounce my names.

I tend to be pretty chill about names in general, though.

I'm not sure why that's 'worse', unless you think using a name generally associated with one gender for a child (presumed to be) of a different gender is hair-raising.

Also, I have to wonder if that was her sole reason; spelled 'Artemus' or 'Artemas', it has a respectable history as a masculine name. (If she explicitly told you that was what she had in mind, this may not apply.)

She explicitly told me that.  It just seemed more wrong to me because from what I've known of Artemis, she isn't exactly fond of men. I recall a story of her turning one into a stag and hunting him down.

Yeah, that's definitely a point.

I wonder was she inspired by the famous Artemis Fowl book series at all? The main character (Artemis) is male.
Just a thought :)

It always seemed odd to me that Mohammed was the most popular name in the world, and that Jesus is a common name in many Spanish-speaking cultures. Where I come from, that would be heresy at worst, and a lot to live up to at best. I always just figured it was a cultural difference and left it at that.

That being said, I wouldn't name my child after a deity; I feel like it's a lot to put on a person.

It seems to be very common in India... lot of people named after deities there. Krishna, Lakshmi, Sita for example.  Even Kali.
