Southern Hemisphere New Year?
« on: April 30, 2017, 07:17:37 pm »
Hey everyone..
So I live way down here in New Zealand, the first country to see the sun! But as being in the Southern hemisphere that means the 1st of May is not spring but autumn (fall).
 So should I be celebrating Samhain today as the 3rd harvest and new year; or Beltane like the rest of the world?
Love to know your thoughts and thanks!:)

There is no "should" unless you are undergoing formal instruction in a particular religion or tradition, in which case what you "should" do is a question you ask your teachers.

I would say a majority of the southern hemisphere pagans I know who do Wheel of the Year stuff adjust their calendars to something that actually makes sense with their environment.

I would do Samhain, because it's autumn. No point doing spring festivals in autumn. Symbolism is all wrong. The Wheel is seasonal, so it should track the progression of your seasons where you are. So unless your teacher or tradition tells you otherwise, celebrate Samhain, or Beltaine. Or something else! Go for your life. Do what you feel works best for you.

As for me, I'm also Kemetic, and my Wheel of the Year in a New Year sense actually begins in February, with Wep Ronpet, the Opening of the Year. The energies of that time of year, with the school year starting up and holidays coming to an end, really gives a great kick to that New Year energy, so that, for me, is my New Year, rather than Samhain.
