Sun and Day, Night and Moon
« on: April 29, 2017, 08:10:08 pm »
Okay, so the Sun and Day are distinct deities and runes in germanic and norse mythologies. Some people have suggested a more subtle difference (i.e. all the run sites saying that the day rune is time or whatever, or gates of some sort), but I've checked the poems and day to day lingo that remains and it seems that they are functionally the same.

Both represent divine light, both are beneficient, both serve the people. The only differences I can think of is that the Sun (Sunna, Sunne, Sól, Sigel) is a goddess riding in a chariot hunted by wolves while Day (Daeg, Dagr) is a dude chillng around on a white horse.

Same difference for Moon and Night.

What gives?

Basically, I guess if there's some nuance in function I'm missing.

Well, "sun" and "day" (and "night" and "moon") are not at all the same things, so there's utterly no sensical requirement that the same entities govern them.

True, they're not the same objects, but they have similar domains.

For example, both the "S" and "D" rune poems describe a more or less identical symbolism. For an ancient germanic spellcaster, what difference was there?

Maybe arguable for "sun" and "day" if one really wants, but not so much for "night" and "moon" except if one doesn't actually pay any attention to how the moon works.
