Greetings from Baron
« on: April 25, 2017, 12:42:35 am »
Hello, I just made my account, so I figured that I would say Hello. I am looking for information on Humanistic Paganism.

I might try to start a Thread on the subject to tap into people's knowledge and expertise here. Are there any Members who are familiar with Humanistic Paganism? What are your opinions or ideas?

I did a cursory look at some older Threads, but did not see anything on the topic. If it has been covered here before, maybe an experienced Member of the Cauldron might be able to direct me to the relevant Threads.

Thanks!

I'm sorry to say that I don't think I've ever heard of it.

Well, I guess that means you need a new SIG, R&P sub-forum, discussion group, etc....:D:

A good web site is- http://www.humanisticpaganism.com

It is basically a naturalistic, non-deistic approach to Paganism, Nature, etc.

I have a long term interest in the topic, but I came here in the hopes of finding some online community relevant to Humanistic Paganism.

Thanks for replying.

That sounds ambitious, but maybe I would like to start out a bit more modestly and slowly. Thanks for the reply and the interest. Maybe a dialogue can begin on the topic here?

I must confess that I was being a bit snarky, but not directed at you in any way. More of a comment that substantial debate has been light of late. Perhaps you can help spark some, and that will be a good thing.

Sorry, I missed your original meaning, but I take your point about snark. Glad to see you here anyway. I like substantial debate.

The idea of Humanistic Paganism is a sort of Religious Naturalism. That is, wonder, awe, and reverence of Nature and Being, without Supernaturalism and Theism.

I would argue that one can be a sort of Cultural Pagan, that is someone who does not believe in the literal existence of the Supernatural and Deities, but maybe appreciates the flavor of them as Ideas and Symbols.

That is, they are a part of Human History and Human Culture. Thus, Cultural Paganism rather than Literal Paganism, where one believes in a literal existence of Gods, Magic, Spirits.

Hopefully this does not offend the sensibilities of Believers here. I am a Religious Pluralist and I respect the diversity of Human views on Religion and Spirituality.

I don't claim to have any definitive answers. I just have my own views, and I am interested in the views of others. I mean no harm.

As many Pagan religions are othropraxic instead of orthodoxic (i.e. stress "right practices" instead of "right beliefs") there have always been some modern pagans in most Pagan religions who do not even believe the deities of their religion exist. Belief isn't required to be a member of the religion, just participation in the rituals.

I appreciate that Randall. I am fairly solitary, but I feel a sense of connection to others when doing rituals alone. I am participating in my own little corner of the World. Anyway, thanks for the reply.
