Themis?
« on: February 28, 2017, 11:26:06 am »
So I was in the middle of a New Moon meditation and an unfamiliar goddess showed up. She was tall, more handsome than beautiful, with black hair and flowing white robes. She had a scale in her right hand and two snakes by her feet.

I have been trying to find out who she is, and the closest I've found is Themis, Greek goddess of justice, divine law, and possibly prophecy. I have never had any interest in the Greek pantheon, so I'm not sure where to go with this. Also, I can't find any connection to Themis and snakes. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to who she could be or why she would show up now?

From my quick research, Themis was associated with the Oracle at Delphi and that it once was guarded by a serpent or two serpents depending on the source you look at. It's not a particularly obvious connection unless you already knew that about the stories around that particular oracle.

Athena could also possibly be a match for it as well? Mostly in that she is associated with justice as well (though not specifically with the symbol of the scales?) and definitely has an association with snakes. It was mostly your description of her as being "more handsome than beautiful" that made me think of Athena as this sounds like a way she would be described.

It could be also a spirit that has taken this image as the image of Justice with her scales is not an uncommon symbol within Western culture.

I remember vaguely reading something about the Oracle of Delphi. Like I said, totally new to the Greek Pantheon! I didn't know that Themis was associated with that. Given that information, that makes a lot more sense in my life now.

I don't think it was Athena. I can't be sure, but I feel like Athena would come to me with armor or a weapon of some kind. Wasn't she a warrior goddess? This presence felt feminine, but very, very strong. It could be that she was the embodiment of Justice, as well. I will meditate on that possibility. Thank you!

The goddess you saw could have also possibly been the Minoan Snake Goddess.
