NEED MOAR DECKS aka "The Obsession"
« on: January 22, 2017, 02:53:46 am »
So...I bought another tarot deck.  This one.

I have three already (gave 2 away that no longer worked for me), two oracle decks, and a lenormand.

My etsy wishlist consists of 23 additional decks I want with varying degrees of desperation.  I'm thinking this one might be next.  I guarantee I'll own a few more before summer, because I am weak.

Please tell me I'm not the only one?

I have some two dozen Oracle decks from magazines, on top of a couple of bought ones and the Wildwood Tarot, and I don't even use them anymore. Definitely not just you.

No, you're not. I just bought my first deck, the Wildwood Tarot. While I'm extremely happy with it and feel like it'll always be "my deck", I can definitely feel the itch to buy more. I really want the Druid Plant and Animal Oracles, but I didn't even think of ordering decks from Etsy.

Say whaaaat?

You must simply start searching etsy for oracle and tarot decks, regardless if you plan to buy anything or not.  Some of the art is absolutely amazing.  And the creativity floors me.

Especially with things like full card tarot decks for some of my favorite animated tv shows (Gravity Falls and Steven Universe).  And some really odd reimaginings of the tarot suites, as well as a vast spectrum of creepy, artistic, and almost lisa-frank-ish oracle decks.

Hell, I really want this lenormand right now...and it's VERY different than my normal interest in cards!

I'm actually kind of surprised I didn't think about it considering I have been scouring Etsy for a Brigid for my altar. Although, until recently I hadn't seriously considered buying a Tarot deck at all; I was going to order the Druid Animal Oracle on Amazon. But then I found the Wildwood Tarot in an amazing little metaphysical shop (it was tucked under a shelf in a corner, so it was a pretty neat find).

Now I'm browsing and I've favorited several.

Sheeeit.  You're not alone.

Me, I have the BOTA deck, the Druid Craft, the Alchemical, Celtic, Wild Wood, and Halloween decks. These are my fave decks, for various reasons, which I've colllected over the last dozen or so years.

And because I love D&D and the Ravenloft setting, I'm eyeballing the Tarokka Deck.  What'll I do with it?  Hell, I dunno.

Point is... keep collecting.  Some might say tarot is a science.  I'll say it's also an art.  Keep collecting.  Don't let anyone stop you.

If you count card games, me too. I can't stop buying Munchkin sets, even though nobody else I know plays it.

You're definitely not alone. I too have a wishlist as long as my arm. For me, it's the ultimate combination of art/creativity, magic, and meditation.

I completely forgot, and you reminded me!  I have THESE!  I bought them for use with Pathfinder RPG and totally forgot and stashed them away.  Super-excited now.

So I was eyeing a deck today (I'm being really, really strong and reminding myself that I don't actually NEED another deck, but it's hard... so hard...) and I saw a review where the reviewer very casually states that they own *three hundred fifty decks*.

All I can think is that it's really good that I'm poor, because I'd totally be that person. I'm a collector by nature.

So... I've been wanting to try an RPG and this one looks amazing. I have no clue who I'd play with (I'd have to make my cats play with me or something). But still.

Definitely not!

There's a whole forum of enablers people -- Aeclectic Tarot --  many of whom own hundreds of decks.

I collect vintage and reproduction fortune telling decks, and now have my own small collection of 25 Lenormand decks, 12 "gypsy fortune telling" or otherwise Lenormand related decks (in the sense that they use a similar set of symbols), 2 oracle decks, and 10 tarot decks.

It can turn into quite an obsession.

I'll just drop an actual link to Aeclectic here, not because I'm also an enabler, nope nope nope, but because it's a better place to link to for decks than directly to Amazon.

I've never actually got around to joining the Aeclectic forums, but I read them sometimes.

As you can see from the thread so far, you're not alone!

I would definitely collect Tarot decks if I had the money (and I didn't already collect other wallet-draining things). As it is, I have owned quite a few in my time, and my current favorites are the Tarot of the Magical Forest and the Yoshitaka Amano Tarot. The former has really lovely traditional symbolism in a cute style, and the latter has a very unusual and lovely take on the imagery.
