Seidr magic starting point
« on: January 17, 2017, 11:11:28 pm »
Where can I get some information on a starting point for seidr. Since seidr is extinct and hasn't been practiced for 900 years, would common folk witchcraft be a good substitute? Or is there a resource that would help start seidr.

Here are some academic books:

"Nine Worlds of Seid Magic" by Jenny Blain

"Shamanism in Norse Myth and Magic" by Clive Tolley.

"Witchcraft and Magic in the Nordic Middle Ages" by Stephen Mitchel.

Raudvere. "Trolldómr in Early Medieval Scandinavia." Ed. Bengt & Clark, Stuart Ankarloo. Vol. Witchcraft and Magic in Europe.

"Source Book of Seid"  by Stephen Flowers and James Chisholm.

We don't have much info, and what we do have come from a variety of sources that have to be read critically.

In the modern era, most seid work in the US and Canada is basically just Harner style neo-shamanism with some Norse trappings.  If you're into that, you can read "Way of the Shaman" by Harner, "Tranceportation" by  Diana Paxson, and a variety of other modern sources on trance and neoshamanism.

If you ask me, though, whatever seid was, it was probably closer to what moderns call "Hedge witchcraft."  I would think non-Wiccan witchcraft would be the way to go for modern inspiration.

I don't consider them the same. Seidr is more shamanic in nature.

Huh.  I've done some work with Harnerian neoshamans and I've attended seidh rituals (run by Paxson).  I don't really see all that much resemblance, though I can see an argument for certain aspects of induction for large scale ritual; what're the parallels you'd draw, in particular?
