George Michael on Xmas, and now this.

'Star Wars' Actress Carrie Fisher Dies at 60 After Suffering Heart Attack

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/star-wars-actress-carrie-fisher-dies-60-after-suffering-heart-n699641

This year has been awful personally, politically, and in celebrity fatality.
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

The first wave of mass media created personalities, particularly from the 1960s and 70s are now reaching the age when deaths can be expected. Whilst younger "celebs" have died, most have a history of substance abuse.

2017 will be exactly the same.

A) This is a shitty thing to say to people in mourning. You must be so welcome at funerals.

B) Tell that to Anton Yelchin.

C) Carrie Fisher was 60. Alan Rickman was not yet 70. Many of the artists we lost this year were around their late 60s. In a time when life expectancy in the Western World is around 80, they were by no means "old" or at an age where their deaths could be expected.

It's amazing how many flavors "not caring is cool do you see how cool I am" comes in.

Any year that starts with David Bowie dying and ends with George Michael, that includes HB2 and the Pulse massacre and this fucking election season, is a fucking trashfire in my opinion and I will cry and/or meme about it as I please.

I am appreciating the variations on "live in tribute to Carrie Fisher: normalize mental illness and strangle fascists with the chains they'd put on you" I've seen going around, though. I think she'd appreciate that legacy.

Like it or not it's true.  50-70 is actually quite a high risk age group. It's the age when a pre-disposition to cancer, heart disease etc  is likely to make itself felt. Reach your mid to late 70s in good health and statistically you're good for another 20+ years or so.

After a lifetime working in personal finance I have lost count of the number of apparently healthy clients who have died suddenly either just before or just after retirement. (I am very welcome at their funerals btw, as my profession ensured that their families were well provided for. Some I attend, some not - depending on whether I felt I'd be intruding too much on private grief).

I'm afraid I had to google Anton Yelchin.

Yes.

Celeb-wise, this year's been royally fucked; but, when I was a wee lad I saw a little indie film called Star Wars, which influenced me in ways I can never fully articulate.  So, yeah, Carrie Fisher's death hit me hardest.
Fittingly, I mourned/celebrated Ms Fisher's passing by putting that movie in the BD player.

Politically, yes... who the fuck could've foreseen the clusterfuck we've gotten ourselves into?  I voted third party, according to my own principles, but I fully expected HRC to beat the Orange One's ass.  Soundly.
On the upside, people have been picking up the Constitution-- looking for a way to circumvent the EC result (talking to you, 'faithless elector' movement)-- and they've been reading the Federalist papers.  Good on them for engaging themselves.
On the downside, people just might learn they don't want a President with a 'pen and a phone.' Or a Prez who'll effect change without Congressional action, or who'll shit on civil liberties and due process rights.  Limits on Executive power are a good thing.  This civics lesson is brought to us by the words 'precedent' and 'shortsightedness'.  It'll be a hard lesson, but mayhap one we deserve.
(Luckily, there're term limits and a midterm opportunity to effect some legislative change.)

Personally, none of my close family died this year, so there's that.  But.  In the summer, a nasty work accident resulted in some extensive surgery.  The ball at the top of my right humerus fractured into several pieces and needed to be wired back together, followed by rotator cuff repar, followed by some stringent physical therapy.
(PS. Norco addiction sucks.)

So, here's hoping 2017 brings less pain, in micro and macro.

Hats off to Kiya, because that. Is. Awesome.

I haven't read Watership Down since I was a kid (some 40+ years ago), and that still made sense to me and totally put a smile on my face.
