No, it was the brainchild of the author H.P. Lovecraft.

Aaaah, bullshit.  It's totally real, and you can get your own copy right here.

KIDDING.

It's totally made up, but it's still a helluva McGuffin.  The print copy I linked to is quite good-- its makers are rather skilled in their verisimilitude.  I took mine to work once, and a scared colleague batted it outta my hand.  True story.

There was an author who devised a whole magic(K)al system from Lovecraft's mythos.  I think it might've been this guy.
A buddy of mine liked it rather well, but I've never looked at it.  Probably great if your paganism is pop-cultural, tho.

No. It is a fictional creation of H.P. Lovecraft. However, the so-called Simon Necronomicon (which is probably what most people think of when they see the word "Necronomicon" given it has sold over three-quarters of a million copies) is based on Sumarian mythology and works as a ceremonial magick system.

See the wikipedia article for more info on the imaginary book Lovecraft wrote about in his fiction and the various versions fans and others have created over the years since Lovecraft wrote his stories.

Technically the legendary Necronomicon is a fiction grimoire conceived by H.P. Lovecraft.

However, it reads very much like traditional grimoires and the sigils presented within seem to push the right psychic buttons.

If you are sincere and already know how to work with sigils I would dare venture that you should be able to get results in performing sigil magick using the same.

I would caution you however, that the tone of the book matches the dark fiction.

The primary difference between left hand path (dark side) and right hand path (light side) magicks, rests in the attitude. Grimoires of either have similar methods differing mainly in polarity.

In other words, dark magick evokes/invokes feelings of sadness, anger, and hatred.  Whereas light side magick should evoke/invoke feelings of happiness, peace, stillness, and love.

Inevitably the choice is up to the magickian.

I somehow got a copy of Tyson's "13 Gates of the Necronomicon" but I've yet to play with it. Possibly because I have a hard time not feeling like a douchelord while trying to summon elder gods.

Yeah its just a book.
Its funny though, in my travels i ran into a Coven that swore by the thing, but they were also the kind of people that thought they could flat out shoot mana bolts and stuff like that. Yeah interesting times
