DSPD Anyone?
« on: October 28, 2016, 04:40:41 am »
I have delayed sleep phase disorder. Which basically means I go to sleep at around 5 to 6 am and wake up at around 1 or 2pm. This is my normal sleep patern. Which is totally backwards from most people.  It's affected my life greatly. I've had to change careers because of it. Hardest part is people thinking I'm basically full of crap. But I've been diagnosed. Just wondering if anyone else might have this disorder? It's not very common.

Although I do not have a diagnosis, I have struggled with similar patterns nearly my whole life.

In my late teens and most of my twenties, my natural cycle was exactly as you have mentioned - bed at 05:00 to 06:00 and getting up an hour or two past noon.

As I've moved into my thirties, my natural sleep cycle is to fall asleep somewhere between 01:00 and 03:00 and then snooze for about ten hours with a brief semi-wakeup at 07:00.

Arranging appointments is really hard. My doctor knows I'm not good for anything until at least noon, but dentists and other folks always seem to want me in at 08:30 when I am going to be super groggy.

My husband doesn't have a diagnosis yet, but we're pretty sure he has it. Any time he tries to change his schedule it ends badly for him; he needs to go to bed sometime between 4am and 6am and he'll wake up around 1, 1:30. (And then on weekends he sleeps the entire day, because he can.)

I don't have DSPD but I'm pretty sure I've got a non-24-hr sleep-wake disorder. I am unable to stick to any one schedule for a long period of time; at some point, I drift out of it and have to spend a long time drifting back.

We'll it's to know others struggle with similar problems. For a long time I thought I was he only one.Had doctors treat it as insomnia for a very long time, until my current doctor figured it out.

Likewise. I suspect I started out with DPSD, but various factors - mainly, but not exclusively, related to having employment that accommodated my circadian better, but not perfectly, leading to me messing with my circadian to accommodate work schedules - disrupted it further. Or possibly I was always non-24, but had better flexibility and capacity to fake normativity when I was younger - no way to tell. I think it's fairly likely that this is also entangled in some way with me being attention-different (ADHD).

I'm just now at the beginning of the process of getting a diagnosis for the non-24.
