Wardruna's new album
« on: October 27, 2016, 09:53:55 am »
Thoughts?
While some songs have a catchy beat, I think Ragnarok all sort of blends in too much.
I just finished listening to it for the first time and a big part of me isn't overly impressed.

I've loved Wardruna for about 5 or so years, and my favourite album is Yggdrasil. I just feel Ragnarok doesn't have the variation in songs like Yggdrasil does.

Vince Noir: I thought it was good for you.
Naboo: What?
Vince Noir: Well, you know, good for your digestive system.

Thoughts?

Tbh, it's my favorite album out of the three, simply because it creates such a strong atmosphere. "Tyr" of course stood out, but surprisingly enough I enjoy "UruR" quite a bit, despite the loooooong build-up. Maybe it was because of the 3/4 time? (Could have been 6/8; I can never tell the difference between the two) "Runaljod" to me made perhaps one of the best album finales I've heard in a long time--maybe because it was a finale to the three albums together and that made it more special to me somehow? Idk.

I do agree that the songs all blended together, but I personally feel this was the kind of album where that adds to the feeling it creates, rather than detracts from it.

Yggdrasil and Gap Var Ginnunga are both great too--Yggdrasil being more varied, as you said, though the songs within themselves were somewhat repetitive (Solringen, anyone? XD). GVG had the same primal feel that Runaljod Ragnarok has, which might be why it always seems to be playing in the background of my house.

I'll stop geeking out now. :whis:

Yeah, though for something named "Ragnarok" I feel like it should've reached some kind of climax, if it's meant to represent the events of Ragnarok. But no one truly knows the motives of Kvitrafn.

My love for Yggdrasil could also be heavily biased as I was in Norway at the time when I first listened to it, so I'm very sentimentally attached to it.

But maybe I just need to give Ragnarok a few more tries :P
I hope it's not their last album though! (considering the name)

Valid point.

Haha, yeah. I think I heard him say somewhere that it's also supposed to represent the new start that happens *after* Ragnarok, too. Hmmmmmm~

Sentimental attachment is a good reason for liking something, IMO. ^^
