Black Cauldron is based on Welsh Mythology.

Book was swesome.  But, although it looked great, I always found the film to be rather dull.

Also, I don't think anyone's mentiond The Dark Crystal yet.

Also-also, there's the 1977 folk-hippie toon version of The Hobbit.  :D:

I was reading one of the other forum posts about pagan movies, and I started to realize that a lot of the movies/shows I watched growing up had pagan (ish) themes to them. Meaning; they weren't outright pagan, but they definitely had some pagan values that I can relate to now.

Some examples are:

Charlotte's Web
Matilda
The Magic School Bus (Ms. Frizzle is either a Witch or a Timelord, lol)

I'm sure there are many more, but this is basically what I had in mind. This doesn't include books like the Giving Tree or the Velveteen Rabbit. What do you guys think? Can you think of examples that stick out to you?

The only thing that comes immediately to mind is Brave.

Miyazaki's work.

For sure. Especially Princess Mononoke.

Hercules is a favourite of mine.

The mythology is painful, however, the story and music is just fine if you ignore the mythology.

I whole-heartedly recommend his whole catalogue for *everyone to see (the Disney releases/English dubbing are marvelous), but would recommend withholding Mononoke and Nausicaa until maybe reaching double-digit age (more adult themes/imagery).

Yeah, I agree with this. I first saw Mononoke when I was about 12 and didn't get it at all. The plot structure is quite different from the usual kids' fare; at the time, I didn't know ambiguous endings were even a thing. (Watched it again in university and I was like, ooooh.)

I thought I was just dumb or not paying attention when I had trouble with Mononoke's timing as a kid (I didn't even get to the end), but since this is a thing, seconded. I rewatched it as a teen when catching up on a bunch of Ghibli and Miyazaki movies and picked it up pretty quick.

Can I go into mild horror (well, 'mild' is a matter of opinion, even among adults, but I definitely watched it aged 7-10 or so) with pagan themes? Because the show Are You Afraid of the Dark? had a good few actually.

So I was just, before publishing this, going through lists of shows played when I was younger and I just realized that no one's mentioned Redwall? That's probably part of why I couldn't stop thinking of NIMH. (the other things I remembered in that dreg were that The Littlest Hobo exists (<3) and that there is/was so much cancon)

I didn't watch much Cardcaptors but I am pretty familiar with that particular multiverse, and with witches who liked CCS, so I feel fairly confident recommending it. I watched a bunch of Inuyasha around the age of 11-14 and it might fit too.

Since I linked those, here are the other ones I suggested or seconded, for ease of reference
The Black Cauldron
Gargoyles
Kiki's Delivery Service
My Neighbour Totoro
Howl's Moving Castle (I also recommend the books)
Spirited Away
The Dark Crystal
Fern Gully
Steven Universe

It might be that people think of that universe primarily as a book series; likewise Discworld, which I think had a few animated adaptations.

redwall has a great animated series, but it not movies, it's tv.

The disc world spans both animated and live action:  Hogfather, the COlour of Magic. going postal, word sisters, soul music, are the ones we;ve seen.

Going to add Willow and Ladyhawke to the list, though definitely for older children because Violence. Gargoyles was my entire childhood, mostly; I actually found Digimon to be really useful to me later on, and there are actual narrative arcs in the different series. Seconding the Dark Crystal.

I'd also go out on a limb and recommend Nico the Unicorn; the only reason I'm out on a limb is because it's been years since I've seen it.

Dragon Tales was always fun for little me. I can't seem to remember if anyone's mentioned the 70's Last Unicorn, but please give that a watch. If you're up for something corny and sweet you can find on YouTube, I'd recommend The Littlest Hobo.

I may think of other things, but this is what I have so far! Hope it helps some!

True. I didn't watch a ton of Redwall, but I had friends who were super into both the series and books, so I think of them about the variations equally as quickly.

to be fair, Magic School Bus is in the OP (unless that started as a movie? that's possible but if so I was unaware)

Jane and the Dragon is another one I'd suggest, and I believe it was based off some books. These are more Asian influenced, but Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra are also good.

For older kids: The Spiderwick Chronicles

Also for older kids, The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising (2007) (an adaptation of a book which apparently fans of the book weren't largely keen on for not being faithful, but as a stand-alone film I thought it had a fair degree of entertainment value).  If I recall correctly it is set in winter, around Christmas(Yule)-time.

Personally I don't recommend Bridge to Terabithia for kiddies (or for certain adults!)  I will never, ever watch it again if I can help it.

Struggling to call any others to mind just now but might come back and add others if I can think of them.

Oh my goodness gracious I cried for days about that one!

I'm utterly ashamed of myself for forgetting about (as it's my favorite cartoon) Over The Garden Wall. It, to me, is perfect for most age groups because it balances silly fun and beautiful animation with a good bit of vintage americana and symbolism. (You should see the fan theories) One thing I'd warn for is that the main villain is quite creepy, so I might wait until OP's little one is older before taking it out.

It won an Emmy, btw.

Miyazaki's work.

I was going to suggest Miyazaki as well.  My kids are 5 and 4 and their favorite movie is My Neighbor Totoro. Other good ones for younger children are Ponyo, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Howl's Moving Castle.  For older children/teens, definitely Princess Mononoke, but that one's definitely not for the little ones.
