Measure your to-read pile!
« on: September 26, 2016, 06:38:32 pm »
How tall is your to-read pile?

Mine is currently 21 cm, or 8 1/2 inches ... and that's just the religion/spirituality stuff (I just acquired a copy of Christianity: the First Three Thousand Years, which is 2 inches thick all on its own).

Add in the various novels and manga, and the whole lot totals 18 inches, or 46 cm. I think I may have a problem. (And that problem is too few bookshelves :p)

How about you?

Paper books - roughly 16 inches, mostly of library books that I'd intended to read on vacation but didn't. Add another dozen titles that are on my Kindle.... and we aren't even going to talk about the to-read list of titles not currently owned or borrowed.

Sheeit.  At this point it's gettin' pretty hard to measure.

There are several 'round my desk that have been little more than cracked open.  And there's even one that I bought on digital because I forgot I had a copy.

Speaking of digital.  How does one stack 1s and 0s?  There're quite a few to-read titles in the ol' tablet, and they take up so little space... Hell, I just scored two steampunk freebies off Amazon last night.

'Tall' is not the appropriate measure. I've barely dipped into the Secondhand Book Spree that my sis and mom gave me for my birthday, which fills a two-cubic-feet box.

I don't have an ebook reader, but I do bookmark things on my browser when I don't have time to read them. Those range from 'fairly short article' to 'whole book', so I can't really estimate 'how tall', just that there are quite a few such bookmarks.

I have a button someplace that says, 'Never trust anyone who has enough bookshelves.'

That's my problem.  I have about 19-20 ebooks in the "to be read" "pile".  However, the "pile" is 0 inches high.

My 'currently reading' pile is only about 3.5 inches....but my 'want to read pile' is probably several feet deep (I tend to acquire books in droves...way faster than I can read them)

As for e-books....I absolutely have more books than I can practically read in a lifetime.  I believe my ebook library is over 3k books now.  Even taking out 1k as things I downloaded just because they were free and don't have a strong impetus to actually read (or stuff like cookbooks/art/coloring books that aren't read per say)..that still leaves what about 6 years of books IF I were to read one book a day.

I love collecting books. For the books I want to currently work on, maybe 5-6". The total and combined lengths of my bookshelves is embarrassingly more than that. I'm a slow reader, and prefer to binge-watch Matt Damon and Tom Hardy movies, so the books get short shrift.  :o

How many megabytes?

I do have a slew of ebooks, but most of them are not necessarily 'to read'; a lot are in mass torrents that I downloaded, or copies of stuff I read first on paper. So I didn't try to count them.

Besides, getting out a tape measure is just more fun. (I was tempted to weigh the books too, but I don't think my kitchen scale could handle it.)

I want one!

Also, word on the secondhand books. My local thrift store has a surprisingly good religion section.

It looks like about 6 or 7 megs. I use epub-format ebooks which tend to be smaller (often much smaller) than kindle-format ebooks.

Mine would be skewed in the other direction - I have a lot of comics and graphic-heavy RPGs in PDF - but I don't really count because part of my book consumption is compulsive and thinking about it too hard messes with my head.

Too tall to be measured, at least if my longer reading list is taken into account.

I happily finished The Oxford Handbook of Roman Egypt this summer. It was very informative. I am now trying to re-read Kupperman's Living Theurgy from a practical instead of (first reading) theoretical approach.

On the Druidical front, there doesn't seem to have come anything new or original the last years, at least not anything I have noticed.

If I stacked up my whole pile, it would stand taller than the house. My library pile alone is about a foot tall (I'm allowed 14 items out at once, and I usually do have as many at any given time). E-book wise, I recently moved my stash onto a 16 Gb drive, as I managed to fill my old 8 Gb one.
