Piss poor pope but a lovely fellow overall. :)

I don't know, he seems to think I'm a harbinger of the apocalypse last time I checked, so I'm not entirely sure if he's a lovely fellow. Granted, he is not the first religious figure to think I am a harbinger of the apocalypse. People I share a cosmology with did it first or at least that I am aiding and abetting the forces of the end of the world.

As far as I've seen, most conservative US Catholics -- of which there are very few -- oppose the death penalty, but that's neither here nor there. There's also plenty of ground, mostly derived from pre-VII material, to support the death penalty from an orthodox Catholic perspective. And I certainly hope Francis opposes homosexuality, or else he'd be more of a piss-poor "Pope" than he already is.

Pope Francis is more like Jesus than those sanctimonious, judgmental, pseudo catholic evangelicals, and orthodox acording to whom?
FOX news?

I am done with this subject.

An unfortunate scandal.

I've been reading Diarmuid O'Murchu's book, Poverty, Celibacy, and Obedience: A Radical Option for Life, and the author discusses a lot about how celibacy is no longer meant to subdue one's sexual desires and try to live an asexual life. Instead, celibacy is an attempt to have a "non-violent" sexuality that is free from harm and hierarchy. He talks about how members of religious orders are not free to marry, as their lives are consecrated to the mission of their order (or diocesan priesthood), but since societal norms have changed so that sex is no longer restricted to marriage, even those who have taken vows to never marry may be free to have what the author calls, "genital intimacy."

It makes sense, as even in other languages, such as French, "celibataire" refers to someone who is unmarried, regardless of whether or not they are sexually active. Until the past few decades, sex was supposed to be restricted to marriage, but society has changed, and despite what some people think, the Church does change to reflect societal changes. O'Murchu points out that in 1962, the Catholic Church changed its theology of marriage to include the mutual love and intimacy of partners, when it had previously just been for the purpose of procreation.

The Catholic Church is probably a long way off from allowing those under vows of consecrated celibacy to have open sex lives, especially via Grindr, but it's interesting that Catholic scholars are debating what celibacy means to the modern age.
