Spiritual Books Aimed at Specific Demographics
« on: August 15, 2016, 06:11:51 pm »
Hi,
Today I got a book that is called the Celtic Women's Spirituality: Accessing the Cauldron of Life by Edain McCoy. I know this book is center towards women, but I flipped through it and it seemed like it had some information in it I might could use. Do you think people should stay away from spiritual books that are geared to a certain group, gender, or even towards a certain religion?

Hi, patchwork_savage - I edited the thread title to better cover what you were asking, so that it's more likely to get the attention of people who'd be inclined to respond. You're not in any sort of trouble; I'm just letting you know so it doesn't confuse you.

I would say no because I get, "Ah-ha!" moments from the weirdest places, so it stands to reason that the broader exposure I have to the world through literature that's most accessible to me, even if I am not the target audience, the more likely that is to happen. When people know better, people usually do better.

In some cases, though, I've found myself committing what's basically intellectual self-injury like I'd read the worst things just to be warned what's out there or to test my own magnanimity and tolerance and...you know what? I don't recommend doing that either. If it's something in-between that simply isn't for you and it's boring and doesn't help, it usually won't help. Life is short.

Last note, even authors who claim to be balanced and objective because they make a noble effort to be, are going to miss out on something to focus on another thing. There's always going to be a gear towards, in a way.
