Thirst Quenchers
« on: July 08, 2016, 06:41:43 pm »
My area is having its first heat wave of the summer, so naturally I have cold drinks on my mind :) How do you quench your thirst?

This week I discovered the awesomeness of roasted barley ice tea. To whit:

- roast 1/4 cup barley in a skillet until golden
- put barley in a saucepan with 3 cups water, bring to a boil, and simmer for 5 minutes
- strain out the barley and let cool
- pour into a pitcher and top up with water (2 more cups in this case)
- chill and serve.

It tastes just like popcorn! I will forever think of it as Popcorn Juice.

Cider is my thirst quencher of choice or Pimms if it is hot and sunny and I can be bothered to assemble the necessary fruit and flowers. It just not the same without them!

I love cider, but if it's hot and sunny and I need to remain functional, I can't have even a drop of alcohol. So I stick to elderflower presse. Non-alcoholic champagne, anyone? :)

If I have the time and inclination to be a bit fiddlier, I enjoy brewing single-fruit teas (lemon, orange, apple or blackcurrant) a bit stronger than normal, let cool down and serve topped up with chilled lemonade and crushed ice.

My usual drink is ice water with lime juice, but I had the pleasure yesterday of introducing a couple of people to a Boston-area summer classic, a raspberry lime rickey.

There are a couple of variations, but it's basically clear soda (either soda water / seltzer, which I prefer, or a clear lemon-lime soda like 7-UP) with raspberry puree, mashed raspberries, or raspberry syrup (depending on what you have handy) and about half a lime's worth of juice. Pour over ice.

Very refreshing, pleasantly festive to look at, and unlike a lot of drinks, the ice just makes things a little less fizzy as it melts, rather than diluting the flavour much.  (ALso nice because it's a fussier drink you can make with shelf or freezer staples.)

If I have to be non alcoholic then I'm totally with you on the elderflower presse! I've got a new batch of elderflower syrup I made too.  We just need some sun. I'm watching the mountains disappear through yet more rain squalls today.

At the moment I'm enjoying fruit and/or herb infused ice water. I particularly like strawberry and mint, mango, and ginger.

You just chop the fruit/herbs and stick them into a jug full of water and leave it for a few hours. The longer you leave it, the stronger the flavour. I like to keep the jug in the fridge.

I do struggle with feeling like I'm wasting the fruit though.

At my office, our department has an iced-tea pitcher and a massive shelf filled with different teas. Most are from David's Tea - the current favourites are Luscious Watermelon, which is a herbal with melons, and Pink Lemonade, which is a rooibus with pineapple, hibiscus, and lemongrass. Whoever drinks the last glass just has to put some more tea in the strainer and put the whole thing back in the fridge.

At home it's more herbal iced teas, and many, many variations on gin cocktails.

I suppose you could still eat the fruit?

I have a pot of lemon balm that I use for making ice tea, too. I'm still trying to find a balance between to much and too little clipping.

I'd like to try making sun tea, but I'm a little wary of using a glass pitcher and having it crack if it gets too hot. (I've ruined a couple of pitchers like that.) Or is that not a problem if it gets heated gradually?

I love doing fruit waters, and I'm definitely one to eat it afterwards. I like cucumber water, too.

Sun tea is great. My fiancé's parents make normal Lipton's black tea every summer and it's delicious. And there's no trouble with breaking glass, even on the super hot days.

Sun tea is the best.  Lipton black unsweetened.

I like to blend teas, too.  F'ex, put in 5 bags Earl Grey and 5 bags mint in a 1 gallon jug.    Add 1/3 to 1/2 cup of sugar.  (Won't make it too sweet, but will punch up the flavor.)  Give it at least 3 hours in full sun.  Let cool and serve over ice.  Mmmmm.

We do this, too! Usually, we use one of those gallon jars to make it and throw a few mint sprigs in it. Yum. :)

I used to work at a juice & smoothie bar and one of my favorites was wonderful for really hot days. I don't make it too often anymore, but on days that I'm up for using the juicer at home (and cleaning it all up :whis:), I do still sometimes make it.

- 1 or 2 carrots
- 1/2 of a lemon
- 1/2 of an apple
- chunks of watermelon

I put the ingredients through the juicer, with as much watermelon as needed to fill up the glass or container. Watermelon will make up about 1/3 to 1/2 of the juice for me, but you can adjust the proportions to your liking. Sometimes I will also blend it with a banana and ice in a blender if I want a thicker consistency. Now if only I had some watermelon at home..

I'm sure there are traditional recipes for making the cordial, but I'm lazy. I just buy it, and dilute it with lemon-flavoured soda, about 6 parts to 1 cordial. (It's sold ready made and bottled as well, which is good for meals out.) Others in my family prefer to put more cordial in and top up with sparkling water, but to each one their tastes.

Oooo.  FRESH mint is the best.

Too bad I just can't grow it.  I know it's practically a weed, but I somehow manage to kill it.  Every. Damn. Time.
Meanwhile the real weeds proliferate like... well... weeds.  Dammit.
