Evaluating the work of Karoly Kerenyi
« on: June 25, 2016, 02:21:13 pm »
I'm not entirely sure if this is the right prefix to use, but it seemed like the closest fit...

I do not consider myself a Hellenic reconstructionist specifically, but I've been dipping into ancient Greek mystery religion to build my eclectic, largely Ancient-Near-East-based practice. My main resource has been Dionysos: Archetypal Image of Indestructible Life, and now I'm starting on Eleusis: Archetypal Image of Mother and Daughter. These are both by Karoly Kerenyi, a mid-twentieth-century scholar who was passed on to me as a good choice for reconstructing Hellenic things.

Now, I have found the content of these books fascinating and solid despite rolling my eyes now and then at the style and some of Kerenyi's philosophical agenda--but I have no background in the subject to tell what's reliable and what's not. So I'd like to ask the SIG if there are any known caveats or grains of salt I should be taking these books with. I'm wary of entirely trusting any one scholar's work.

If you want to recommend me other scholarly sources to even out my reading (my specific Power of interest is very much Dionysos, but He seems to be pointing me at Persephone as well), that's cool too and I'd appreciate it! But I'm mostly interested in knowing if there are known issues with Kerenyi's work that I should be taking into account.
