Research studies on pagans
« on: May 27, 2016, 05:18:00 pm »
I don't know where else to put this, so hopefully it is in the correct place.

I have had a slow day today so I decided to do some database searches on paganism. I came across some interesting ones that I thought I should share. I'm not involved with psychology or sociology (I am a chemist) but I always find it interesting to read these articles. I think I will keep this going with other published papers I come across. Feel free to add any others :)

Religious attitudes of people at an OBOD festival in England (2011):

Really? How'd you get involved if you don't mind me asking?

No secret - it was web based and the request was shared pretty widely in UK based FB groups. :)

Pure Religion and Real Sacrality: Authenticating Religion beyond Institution and Traditions by Dick Houtman...Interesting sociological study on the New Age movement in the Netherlands, although the controversial conclusion, which was that religion outside of churches would be worthy of examining outside that definition, apparently made a few anthropology students go, "Huhwha?" because they'd been studying those unchurched-but-still-technically-definitively-religion religions all along. Like what's even going on over there, Sociology?

That sounds like a very interesting read. I'll have to check it out

Dr. Jenny Butler completed her doctoral thesis on neo-paganism in Ireland. You might find her work interesting!

Actually, I've been meaning to do some research into Neo-Paganism. I could do this through my University easily enough, I just haven't got around to it.

I might do a bit of reading and then describe a few articles here. Perhaps this way we can get a list of good journals for Contemporary Pagan studies, and provide interesting articles for analysis.

This would be fantastic! I've found a few others I will add when I get back to my office tomorrow.

A look at how paganism and esoteric ideas have inspired music genres like black metal, neofolk, and industrial (2011):
http://apps.webofknowledge.com.weblib.lib.umt.edu:8080/full_record.do?product=WOS&search_mode=GeneralSearch&qid=1&SID=3Eu6Q81epGZxvAePoic&page=1&doc=1
This author has lots of interesting papers about esotericism and heathenism. Here is a link to his academia page:
https://independent.academia.edu/KennetGranholm

Some statistics of wiccans and pagans as distributed throughout the US and what general allignments there are to life choices(2008):
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com.weblib.lib.umt.edu:8080/doi/10.1111/j.1468-5906.2008.00439.x/full

This isn't a study, but it's an interesting read. It's a synopsis for how a social worker should approach having a client that is from a pagan family or is a pagan from 2008:
