It's also worth noting that supposedly non-hierachical groups often aren't.  It's more that the hierachies are unstated and informal.  But not necessarily any the less strong for that.

One of my standard recommendations on this is Jo Freeman's The Tyranny of Structurelessness.

Andrew Cornell's Occupy Wall Street and Consensus Decision Making: Historicizing the Preoccupation With Process is dense and overly academic for my tastes in places, but is still worth a read.

Alternatively, the lack of any formal discussion of who's doing what leads to a handful of people taking on the bulk of the work and everyone else doing almost nothing. Which can lead to serious burnout over time.

All this is very true. A well constructed charter and bye-laws will avoid the problems with both extremes.

Not always. They can also lead to the rise of the kind of people who find making points of order stimulating.  I'm not sure any organisational structure comes without problems.

Personally I prefer groups that are ultra democratic, but not conensus based. But that can lead to issues of mobocracy and personality based politics.

I see some dense and overly academic reading in my near future :).

Assuming that the group doesn't implode first, in a flurry of accusations from those who do nothing that the ones who do the work (and particularly the one(s) that take on the decision-making aspects of that work) are doing it as a power-grab. .

Personally, I hold that to be a lesser evil.

I agree with you on this point, as far as administration and finances go, but in a magical/spiritual group there will also be need of a mechanism in place, to give persons, who have experienced the full mystery of the particular group or are very experienced in certain advanced mind-altering techniques, an opportunity to guard the integrity of the mystery and continue to develop the techniques, so that newbies will be taught with a high level of skilfulness. A separation of executive and magical committees is my solution of the problem.
