Scalia Shuffles Off

Well, that's interesting.

US politics being what it is, the President probably has a big chubby over the opportunity now in his hands.

Oooooor, he's ripping out his increasingly grey hairs, because he doesn't have enough time left to appoint a successor.

Think it'll take longer than 10 months?

Hopefully he's planned ahead for this opportunity to appoint someone who is not a raging racist and oppressor :)

I wouldn't be at all surprised. It's an election year.

I'd be damned surprised if the President got anybody to confirmation hearings before his successor gets sworn in, considering Congress has wasted such a huge amount of time obstructing his every move for the last eight years.

I know the Republicans in the Senate will try to delete a vote for 10 months, but I kind of doubt they will be able to do so. The longest Supreme Court confirmation process in US history was only something like 125 days (Louis Brandeis, appointed by Wilson).

Which is why I'd expect Obama to move fast as possible.  I bet he announces a name within a week.

And this is an incredible opportunity that'll have ramifications for years, and a powerful thing to add to a sitting President's legacy.  Obama's not gonna leave this one laying around for the next President to pick up.

I have never had such a powerful urge to grab a couple of cooking pot lids and parade thru my neighborhood to announce the spectacular news. Nevermind that it is 1:00am and the Norwegians would not have a clue what I was whooping about.

As for how this will play out for the circus candidates...DIS GON B GUD.

A damn fine man has left us, but has gone on to reap the rewards of his dedicated public service. God bless you and keep you, Justice Scalia.

As for the nomination and confirmation... let the games begin >~<

Indeed. US politics at its best is akin to a neverending football game where the goalposts move and nobody's sure who's got the damn ball.  So long as it doesn't devolve into a reality TV shit-show, it should retain some potential for entertainment.

This would be Obama's 3rd court justice pick.  Interesting times.

Hanging this here.

I was on a small roadtrip today and was listening to some speculation about whether his death was homicide or truly natural. Now, I'm wondering about the veracity and reliability of that speculation, but does anyone have any thoughts on it?

Eh, it's making the rounds in the whacko circuits but he was elderly and not in the best of health. It's a tragedy all the same, but foul play? Nah
