9th Planet? Let's Name It!
« on: January 20, 2016, 01:25:19 pm »
There might be a ninth planet (and we're not talking Pluto, which got demoted to dwarf planet) in our solar system!

New evidence suggests a ninth planet lurking at the edge of the solar system
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2016/01/20/new-evidence-suggests-a-ninth-planet-lurking-at-the-edge-of-the-solar-system/

Who better to name it than us neopagans, with our knowledge of the world's mythologies? I'll start the suggestion box...

...by borrowing from my next novel, a sci-fi space opera that posits a black hole orbiting our sun at the outer edge of our solar system. I'll appropriate that black hole's name for this new planet:

Nemesis

...which I esp. like because it keeps things in the Roman pantheon, along with the other major planets. Plus it fits with how it disturbs things for the objects out in the Kuiper belt. And there's this.

Other ideas?

The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

Nemesis

And yes, I know she's Greek, but it seems she was known by the same name to the Romans, too

I would be happy with any name, so long as it is not Niburu. I was seriously intrigued by the news, until I realised that its only a matter of time before someone goes there.

My thoughts exactly. :)
The pace of progress in artificial intelligence (I’m not referring to narrow AI) is incredibly fast. [...] The risk of something seriously dangerous happening is in the five year timeframe. 10 years at most.--Elon Musk

I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence," [Bill] Gates wrote. "First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern. I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don\'t understand why some people are not concerned."

Nemesis

Nemesis would prabably be a confusing name as it was already used as the name of the brown dwarf/super planet that was supposedly responsible for hurling comets out of the Oort Cloud.  This hypothesis did not hold up, but the name is fairly well known and associated with it.

As a Nemesis devotee, I absolutely approve of this idea.

Yuggoth's a good one, too.
