Fabulous actor; I had no idea he was battling cancer. He not only managed to magnificently torture students, but also every syllable he uttered, as Prof. Snape in the HARRY POTTER films, and he was terrific in GALAXY QUEST and as the Sheriff of Nottingham in the Kevin Costner ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES...but I'm told the stage is where he really flourished.

For those who don't know, I post brief (one paragraph) movie reviews at my website, and last week I was lucky enough to see a preview screening of EYE IN THE SKY, which I now presume is Alan Rickman's last film. The review is posted.

The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

Sad to hear. His voice was so interesting. I would have loved if Rickman and Benedict Cumberbatch had played against each other in some costume drama, but now they didn't get a chance to do it. Imagine their characteristic voices erupt in an nice old building of brick, with fireplace and old fashioned windows!

That's so sad. I'm a huge theater geek and he is a legend. He will be missed.

I heard last night and cried a lot; today will be spent fighting back tears (and failing). When I was a teen Alan Rickman was my idol and my first major celebrity crush. When I wasn't imagining a torrid love affair with him, he was inspiring me to be a better actor.

May he have a safe journey to the land beyond. May those who love him be comforted.

He also had one of the most interesting and recognizable voices, probably second only to James Earl Jones. He also had a lot of excellent parts, although I suspect he will be most remembered for playing Hans Gruber in Die Hard and Snape in the the Harry Potter films.

Side note: This appears to be a bad year to be 69 and have cancer. We've already lost David Bowie and Alan Rickman.

Neither did I, this is very sad news.
