Is paganism restricted by race?
« on: December 21, 2015, 06:53:23 pm »
I recently felt a calling to honor my ancestors and the old gods. But I've read people who said you should honor the gods of your ancestors, I'm just curious to know if this is true.

It's total bullcrap, for the most part. As an example, someone who has zero Irish ancestry can still honor the Morrigan or Lugh if they want to do so. Ancestor veneration is something that is found in many cultures, so you can do that as well. Do your research, and see who calls to you.

Various reconstructionists will tell you this is the absolute truth.

Me personally, I'll disagree with them.

IMO and this is only MY opinion, the gods who call you are the right ones to do so.

Okay, to be respectful, don't say you're following an insert_name_of tribe_or_path_here tradition unless you've been formally accepted into that tribe, path, etc.

But can an African American worship Cernunnos? Can an Irish person call on Aradia? Can a Celt call a Norse deity? IMO heck yes. I don't think the gods expect us to do a genealogy chart before we cast Circle. What they care about is how we relate to that particular deity, and what lessons they can teach us.

I don't think the deities necessarily expect us to cast Circle. That's very trad-specific, and not at all universal among pagan religions.

in my opinion, its something that is between you and the Gods.  no one else can decide what is right for you.

I believe the God's call who they want to. I personally honor deities of my ancestors, but they don't really care, as long as their honored and worshipped accordingly!

We are mutts & it would be had to find someone who is of a single race, so I wouldn't see a problem with calling whatever Gods you wish to.
I worship the old Gods because my heart tells me to not because I am told too.

And what are they gonna do about it, if a God calls to someone they do not personally like? Ground Odin for bad behavior? Tell Thor to go to bed without dinner? I mean come on, that is outrageously silly.

Don't use tribe-specific things unless you're part of that tribe or have been given the okay. I agree with that. But the Gods have their own whims, independent of what man might think is right or wrong, and I am generally very iffy about when mortals choose to speak on their behalf. Whatever they believe is fine... spirituality and religion can be a very personal thing, and that is all good. But in that same manner, it isn't their business what non-ethnic people believe, either. That's between them and the Gods, end of story. If you don't like it, then don't practice together with those people, but telling them that their faith is somehow invalid is rude not only to them, but to the Gods as well, because they were the ones who called them to that path.
