Celtic Mythology
« on: September 11, 2015, 09:28:46 am »
What are some of your favorite tales and stories in the realm of Celtic Myth and Folklore? Do you base your practice on these such tales, or do you use them as just a reference to your practice?

Sorry to see no one replied to this post.  It's late but here are some thoughts.

I don't base my practice off them, no, but that's because I'm not strictly speaking following any kind of organised practice.  My practice is undefined, but heavily influenced by pre-Norman Celtic history.

Since 'Celtic' is a very broad word, I'll include sources from a variety of Celtic cultures.

First of all I would like to make a major distinction about different kinds of 'Celtic'.
Celtic is as enormous as Hinduism, Christianity, Europeans or Americans!
So 'Celtic Mythology' is a big mishmash.

Subject to respecting your right as a Pagan to ignore what I say, it's necessary to speak in terms of one of the big Celtic cultures.
That means Wales (original British) - or Ireland as the main ones - or Scotland, Brittany, Cornwall, Man, Iberian etc as the others.

Frequently these big traditions actually flatly contradict each other.
For example Manawydan in Wales is a clever, resourceful saviour type, but Manannan of Ireland whose name is used to merge them, is frequently a clever villain.
Wales (British) culture has strong Roman influences, and has developed a powerful ability to adapt and survive by absorbing other influences. Rome imposed the Pax Romana (peace, though not 100%) which can be seen in a work yearning for its lost past like the Mabinogi which loathes war. It therefore has very powerful, strategic women.
Irish origins were much more conservative, because not forced to adapt to that long Roman conquest. Irish tales are generally more warlike, more about fighting heroes.

So I place myself in Wales, and I study the Mabinogi.
Practice? I used to practise Circlework but after 30 years it's built into me. I rarely actually do anything on the outside any more. I just sink into it inside. Sometimes it just finds me, or some places speak and there I go again.
I do find endless inspiration in the tales and of course I have a living relationship with my lady.
