Road Trip fiction
« on: July 17, 2015, 10:45:07 am »
When I fell into Google today, I wound up reading an article recommending eight science fiction/fantasy "road trip" novels:
Eight SF&F Road Trip Novels to Get You Ready for Mad Max: Fury Road.

I've only read three of them, so this necessitates either a trip to the bookstore or some clicking on my Kindle, since I have a love for the road trip.  And then I got to wondering how many other good novels in this vein were missed in the article.

So, any suggestions?  What's your favorite "road trip" story, of any genre?

Hmm, I have more of there than I thought. Of course, some of them involve modes of travel other than roads.

Watership Down counts, I think.
Black Horses for the King, by Anne McCaffrey (at least the first half)
Chanur's Legacy, by CJ Cherryh (more a space trip)
The Skylark series, by EE Smith (fringe example)
Oath of Swords and its sequel The War God's Own, by David Weber
The Sunrise Lands and the 2-3 following novels, by SM Stirling.
Just about any Redwall book, by Brian Jacques (Mossflower and Salamandastron are my favorites)

If you can find a copy, Captains Outrageous by Roy Young is one of my more obscure favorites. It's about the titular Captains racing to catch up to a mad wizard before he reaches the artifact of Doom; hilarity ensues.

If you're into classical literature, there's also Journey to the West, which may be the oldest example of the genre.

McCarthy's "The Road."  Yeah, it's on that list, but damn it's good.

Also, "The Talisman" by King & Straub.
You have my sword
And my shield
And my... um... slacks.

American Gods.

Like, how not? Gods snarking at American roadside attractions. For a Brit, Gaiman captured the Midwest roadside feel perfectly.

Agreed.

I like Warren Ellis' Crooked Little Vein as a roadtrip novel. It's like a pervert's guide to the country.
