Books on Celtic Mythology and Paganism
« on: July 05, 2015, 08:20:57 am »
I was wondering if anyone could recommend some books on Celtic mythology/gods and goddesses as well on Celtic religions. I know this is the direction I'm supposed to be going in, but I have no idea where to start as my knowledge base is SUPER slim and what I do have comes from Internet searches (worried about the reliability of that information...).

Thank you!

Celtic Mythology by Proinsias MacCana is a great place to start! http://www.amazon.com/Celtic-Mythology-Proinsias-MacCana/dp/0600006476

It gives a great overview of Celtic Myth and legend!

'Celtic Gods and Heroes" by Marie-Louise Sjoestedt is an excellent book as is the one already mentioned.

Excellent! Thank you, both! I just ordered both (Amazon makes this all too easy...). In the meantime, are there any online resources that are relatively reliable? I'm always so worried I'm reading something that's really just fluff someone else has made up and has little to no basis in the actual belief system.

We used to have a resource database in the Hazel & Oak SIG ( our Celtic Polytheism SIG), but, for some reason, it's no longer accessible.

Since that's not available, I'd recommend the reading list on the CR FAQ (http://www.paganachd.com/faq/readinglist.html). It's a very good and comprehensive list (although a few books have come out since this list was published), with some important annotations.

Actually, the rest of the FAQ might interest you, as well, if you're new to Celtic mythology and spirituality.

For more online resources, try Land, Sea, & Sky (http://homepage.eircom.net/~shae/), which is a good online book; and Tairis's blog (http://www.tairis.co.uk/), which, in addition to the wealth of info in the blog itself, also includes a "starter" reading list (http://www.tairis.co.uk/resources/the-quick-and-dirty-where-do-i-start-book-list) and a very comprehensive reading list (http://www.tairis.co.uk/resources/the-big-book-list).

And, you're right, there's a LOT of unreliable info out there.  But these 3 resources will give you a fantastic start.
