What's on your Solstice playlist?
« on: June 20, 2015, 05:31:31 am »
I'm just putting mine together. There will be a lot of Medieval Baebes, but I want to put non-folk on it this year. I'm definitely going to include The Beigness by Kate Tempest, and probably Crazy in Love - songs which  have the feel of the Solstice, not just rustic fiddles ^_^

Any suggestions?

I <3 music recommendation threads and can go on for hours, but I'll keep it to five.

For songs that are still folk (and may even have fiddles) but have a bit more 'punch' to them, folk punk is always a strong choice.

This New Model Army song is the nearest I think a band has ever got to encapuslating the feel of the Solstice in a single song.  It's about consigning your fears and doubts to the fire.  I have happy memories of dancing manically to this up on top of Glastonbury Tor.  (Although I think we may have slightly terrified the poor hippies)

More folk punk from The Levellers, perhaps the quintessential summer festival band. A song about looking forward to new adventures and opportunities.

For a complete change of genre, nobody does realisation of the will and self validation quite like the New Romantics.  Meeting the perfect halfway point between glorious and ridiculous, this Spandau Ballet number is just stirring.  There's no other word for it.

For the romantic side of the Solstice.  Britpop also-rans Gene are unfairly maligned in my book.  (Sure, they're Smiths copyists to an extent.  But they're good Smiths copyists).  This love song shows what they were capable of when firing on all cylinders.

This one's a bit off-kilter, but it works for me.  Carter USM's ode to hedonism and partying.  (Amusing story about this video.  It was their only hit in Australia.  Apparently, when they toured, some of the audience were a bit disappointed to find out that Carter USM were the aging punks in suits, not the handsome topless male models).

Well, church is in the morning, so the folk-music quota will be filled.

I'll likely spend the rest of the day listening to what I've had in heavy rotation lately:
-Lincoln Durham ("Southern-Gothic-Gospel-Revival-Punk" with hints of folk and blues),
-Lots of the legendary BB King (RIP), and
-VNV Nation's Resonance
You have my sword
And my shield
And my... um... slacks.

My Spotify Midsummer playlist link: http://open.spotify.com/user/1183739115/playlist/5IHeHPH3M0B1DxDqTSBJUh

Includes lots of songs about Manannan Mac Lir (it's his day, in my practice!) and some fun ones I associate with summer incl a Levellers song (One Way), a song by Dodgy that sums up summer festivals for me (Staying Out for the Summer), some Steeleye Span and other folk, and a lot of Leslie Fish who does great summer Pagan-y songs. And some classics - Ella Fitzgerald 'Manhattan', Nina Simone 'Feeling Good'. And a bit of Damh the Bard 'Noon of the Solstice'.

"We're all stories, in the end. Make it a good one, eh?"
