Few Problems
« on: March 26, 2015, 05:10:37 am »
Hi! I have make few threads about asatru a long time ago. I have read about paganism and asatru more and i think that my "path" can be asatru, i am very intrested about it. My problem is how my own heritage can be shown in my practicing. Viking and pagan history is part of Finland but there is also long history like shaman, and so called finish paganism. I have read that some asatrus practice shamanism and other things, so is it ok to include these to asatru. For me i am very intrested asatrus and finish paganism and their relationship with nature. I havent found much information about vikkng religion and connection beetween finish paganism. Both religions honour ancestors and this is important to me. My text is again little messy, but i hope that you get my point and problem.

Let's look at it this way...

The Eddas talk about seers (the vǫlva) and seiðr. Odin even practiced seiðr. So I don't see why they couldn't be combined. Ásatrú means "faithful to the Aesir". Are you faithful to the Aesir? If yes then you are Ásatrúar, regardless of other practices. :) It's true that no one really knows what the Norse did and how they did it. We only have texts that were written down a couple of centuries after the fact.

I kind of had a similar problem, though I don't think I ever expressed it in words. What I ultimately ended up doing was my still-ongoing process of crafting a personalized variant on more Anglo-Saxon Paganism, with elements from post-Christian (including modern) culture. The reason is because it's a living tradition not limited to a specific moment in the past.

Besides, there was a lot of mixing and matching in pre-Christian traditions. I'd say if you want to express your Finnish ancestry in your practice, combine Finnish Shamanism with Asatru. I know an Asatruar who is also a Druid. Pagan religions aren't typically exclusionary.
