*shrugs* it's not my holiday, nor my ethnicity - why would I do stuff for it?

What Shad said.  Also, I have NEVER heard of anyone sending greeting cards for St. Patrick's day.

Neither have I, and my father's side of the family were/are Irish Catholic (having emigrating from Contae na Mí).

I'm genuinely curious as to where the greeting card thing might have gotten started. The cynical jerk in me wants to ascribe it to Hallmark.

Actually, I didn't think St. Patrick's Day cards even existed before googling them.  Then again, I don't go into the card aisle of the supermarket so what do I know?

I don't think they exist here. We do greeting cards, but not really on the level they do in the US. And no one does much for St Patrick's in Ireland (well, in large cities maybe) . I can't even remember to send Christmas cards most of the time, so I'm not adding another easily-forgotten festival to the list!

I am Irish, well Irish American, and although I love St. Patrick's day, I've never sent out greeting cards. But like Naomi said, I barely remember to send out birthday or Christmas cards so I'm unlikely to add another card to the mix.

Same here. I didn't think they existed but then again, I don't go to the card aisle and look for them.

Nor is it my holiday or my ethnicity.

But I do like to send cards then.

It is a holiday for all the Irish worldwide - and for all friends of Ireland and the Irish worldwide.

Eh, only recently, and more in the diaspora than in Ireland I think (although that may be changing). I tend to associate St Patrick's more with 'plastic paddies', and ridiculous things like green beer, than actually honouring the Irish. I wish there were more celebrations of things like Irish independence or the Easter Rising, personally. But then, St Patrick's is the national day of Ireland, so it sort of commemorates that. I just see it getting overlooked for drunkeness, a lot. Not a great stereotype of the Irish really.

Same here. I don't even wear green on St. Patrick's Day like everyone else does at work. But wait... I don't participate in anything at work anyway. :p

I've certainly seen St Patrick's Day cards in stores around here (Washington, DC metro area, USA), but I personally don't send them.  But I don't really celebrate St Patrick's Day, and I rarely send greeting cards at all ever.

(The only time I've used greeting cards in the last several years was when my daughter was unexpectedly hospitalized recently. I bought a stack of cards -- feel better, hang in there, we miss you, thinking of you, etc. -- and the whole family signed them and wrote notes in them. Then we took the entire bag of them to her, so she could open one whenever she needed to. I told her to think of them as paper hugs that she could have any time she needed us but we couldn't be there with her. She told me later that bag of cards was a huge emotional lifeline for her.)

It is the other way round here.

Here in Germany there are no St. Patrick's Day cards.

But I usually manage to find cards with motives fitting for the occasion.

And I send them to a few people who are interested in it.

And they like it.

And I get real original  Patrick's Day cards  in return from Ireland and the US.

That's Scots Gaelic for the Irish, Sláinte mhaith ;).

Well you can get greeting cards for anything,  but no, it's not a big practise here.

St. Paddy's is a public holiday here too, in both the north and south, which has become almost as big of  a celebration as it is in the States especially in tge bigger cities,  but lets face it Facebook posts have replaced greeting cards nowadays it seems.

And what about: "Beannachthaí na Féile Pádraig dhuit!":)

Meaning: "Blessings for St. Patrick's Day to you!"

That is a blessing that I like to use on the cards that I send. :)
