Culture: Western Europe vs. Central Europe vs. Eastern Europe
« on: October 28, 2014, 10:15:56 pm »
Okay so I do know someone who's travelled to all three sections of Europe and supposedly all parts have a different culture and way of life but for some reason she couldn't really elaborate. So perhaps since this is a very global community here, maybe I could some perspectives on how these culture compare and contrast. Not just politically or religiously but culturally as well.

Sorry if this the wrong board, couldn't figure out where to put it.

You're... aware that this question goes WAY beyond what anyone could possibly answer in a forum post, right?

All three sections of Europe?
Maker, though the darkness comes upon me,
I shall embrace the light. I shall weather the storm.
I shall endure.
What you have created, no one can tear asunder.

Perhaps the reason she couldn't elaborate is that there's really no way to answer the question the way you've asked it. There are a lot more than just three cultures in Europe, and dividing it into western/central/eastern leaves out a lot of those cultures completely (as Allaya, who is in Norway, has already mentioned you've done with the culture she lives in), and even for those not left out, falsely implies that they aren't distinct - that, f'ex, all of 'Western Europe' is a single culture, when it's not. Heck, in many cases, even specific countries aren't single cultures.

There are distinct cultural difference between the Northern and Southern parts of the Netherlands. Or actually, south, north, east and west/randstad. One could probably meaningfully write a book on that - and driving across the entire country in any direction won't take you more than three hours. Germany's at the least got Bavaria and former Eastern Germany as very distinct cultural regions, but that no doubt oversimplifies. I doubt other countries are simpler. You could split up by country, but that again won't always line up with region-within-Europe.

Then there's the fact that, while most of us in Europe have traveled around Europe quite a bit (I have lived in Germany as well as the Netherlands, traveled to Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, England, Austria, Switzerland, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal - though not mainland, which likely matters - and Greece. I may still be forgetting something.) having been somewhere isn't nearly the same as having seen enough to meaningfully comment on cultural differences.

Okay sorry  for my broad question. I know about various countries and what not. But I've often heard people say Western Europe is so different from Eastern Europe. I've even heard people refer to Great Britain for example as being "European lite" and actually closer to the American culture than other European countries. What's up with that at least?

Most times I've heard of Western vs Eastern Europe, it's referring to the parts of Europe that were associated with the USSR (East) and those that were not (West).

I'm honestly more used to thinking of Europe as divided into North and South with the divider being the Alps.
