Bring Your Bible to School Day
« on: October 16, 2014, 05:49:50 pm »
So I came across this and I'd like to see what you think.

http://www.adfmedia.org/News/PRDetail/9354

Also, this is the article they've aimed toward the kids:

http://www.dayofdialogue.com/get-started-planning-bring-bible-school-day/

And another article: http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2014/10/16/the-reason-bibles-will-be-popping-up-in-public-schools-across-america-today/

Quote
“Students have a constitutional right to participate in and promote ‘Bring Your Bible to School Day.’” reads the legal memo. “Unfortunately, schools all too often censor religious expression for fear of violating the often misunderstood ‘separation of church and state,’ for dislike of religious viewpoints, or for a desire to avoid controversy.”

I'd just like to say that the not misunderstood separation of church and state protects them too. From my experience, they'd throw a fit if they had to "tolerate" non-Christian prayer in schools.

So, can I send my kids in with their My Little Satanic Bible?

This is my only real problem with this. Most of what these folks are proposing sounds fine so long as the teachers/admin stay out of it and it isn't done during class time, but those pushing it would likely have a fit if non-Christians did the same thing.

And the fact I'm seeing this on Facebook billed as an "alternative" to Spirit Day (where people wore purple yesterday to protest LGBT bullying) makes it even worse.

This is so frustrating to me. I don't even live in the deeper parts of the Bible Belt and I'm already tired of having to go head-to-head with Christian persecution complexes that make me have to justify my right to exist (as a queer person and as a non-Christian). It might be because I'm recovering from surgery and have zero patience left but I feel like this is one of those back-breaking straws, you know?

Oh, I know. I've been a UU for about seven years and I definitely wouldn't call my local congregation or the denomination at large Christian. I do consider my local congregation a "church" though, and RE classes in other congregations are sometimes colloquially called Sunday School. Because it's education on a Sunday and all that.

Sunday School and RE (UU, Religious Education) are not the same.  Sunday School  is rote teaching of the bible with memorization thrown in (no questions allowed).  RE you are taught to ask questions and think about what you are learning.

"Sunday School" is religious education that shifts from church to church and denomination to denomination. UUs are not the only religious denomination that calls their religious education classes... religious education. Like I already said, colloquially someone could call UU religious education programs "Sunday School" the same way someone could colloquially call a UU congregation a "church". Insisting that no, we only use THESE words with THESE meanings is pretty pedantic and gets in the way of having a conversation.

My UU congregation is planning to introduce "Sunday School" relatively soon according to you. We all know what we're talking about. We know what curriculum we're using. We live in a super Christian area and the term that is used for "religious education for children on Sunday mornings" is "Sunday School."

If you don't want to use that for what your congregation does, or what the UUA does at large? That's cool. I don't care.

Huh.  The Christian church I went to when I was a kid didn't do Sunday school either.  I wonder why they called it that.
