Kerbal Space Program
« on: September 23, 2014, 06:50:11 pm »
Erm. What it says on the tin; it's a sandbox space-exploration game that I've best heard described as 'NASA by trial-and-error'.  It's still technically in beta, but there is an extensive community (including mod support, which I've yet to figure out how to work properly.)

I picked it up about six months ago, played enough to get reasonably good at Mun landings, but kept getting stalled due to not grasping the concepts behind orbital rendezvous. Fortunately, I picked it up again on...Sunday...and have finally found a guide that explains the bits that I was missing; mostly in how to effectively use the 'target' mode on the navball.

There's also a new money-and-science career mode included in the latest version, and my Little Agency That Could has just completed our first successful manned mission to Minmus (Kerbin's second moon: small, moderately inclined orbit, and the approximate color of mint ice cream).  It's got a lovely amount of science, with the multitude of biomes, and the low surface gravity means that my 'lander' craft can be almost minimalist in the amount of fuel it carries.  I've gotten a lot of practice doing Minmus orbital rendezvous, as the orbiting craft is carrying a mobile science lab to clean out the experiment bays in the lander.

Once this is completed I'll be taking the next step out and going for an interplanetary voyage; the only thing that's up for debate is where to go.  The Kerbol system contains analogues for Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Pluto (ish), each with their own quirks.  Whatever the destination, I'm planning to assemble a nuclear-engine interplanetary ship in low Kerbin orbit, partly as an exercise in more complicated docking.

Here's a picture of the Minmus rocket, standing on the launchpad on a glorious Kerbin morning.
