What would be a good beginning point?
« on: September 15, 2014, 10:58:32 pm »
I understand that you don't choose a God or Goddess, and they choose you, and it can come in any kind of unexpected ways, but what would be a good way to let Them know you are searching? A general meditation? I am new to meditation. If yes, can I get a suggestion of a book or website to read? Thank you for all your help!

Researching different pantheons and ancient cultures is helpful to see what you are drawn to, if there are any deities that spark your interest, or an ancient civilization that you have an affinity for. I started with DJ Conway's book, Magick of the Gods and Goddesses, when I was looking for patron deities, and it's definitely not an accurate or academically sound book, but it did expose me to different pantheons so I could see which ones I was drawn towards. I wouldn't recommend that book, but there are similar ones you can find. Pantheon.org is also a great resource for general information on gods. Encyclopedia of Gods by Michael Jordan is also decent, if you want a book.

As for meditation, there are various methods you can try. i would start with something simple, like focusing on your breath to quiet the mind. A good rhythm is breathing in to the count of four, holding for another four seconds, and then exhaling to the count of four, and repeating that. Listening to music is also helpful, if you know of any that can assist in reaching altered states of consciousness. Visualizations can also help, depending on what you want to do. If you want to absorb life force energy, imagining yourself as a tree drawing energy from your roots and soaking it in through your leaves is helpful. If you want to cross into another realm, it helps to imagine yourself crossing some kind of liminal threshold, like swimming down into dark water and re-emerging somewhere else, or floating up on a cloud to your destination, walking through doors, etc. I hope that helps.

There's no reason you can't pick a god who appeals to you, start making offerings, and see what response you get. It might be crickets, or a nudge in a different direction, but an honest gift rarely goes astray.

You could theoretically leave an offering with a proclamation of 'hello! I am interested in working with gods and spirits! if there are gods and\or spirits interested in a reciprocal relationship please let me know!" but I would advise against that unless you have some way of vetting the gods and\or spirits who answer.
