I was aware of 'forfiture corridors' at work in some places but thought they were being dismantled and discouraged.

Well here's the advice being given in our news:

And I think that's just sad as I like viisiting the U.S.

I imagine this is very much dependent on race and class status

The problem is ( besides that such things even exist) is that it's hard to decide how one will be perceived in a distant place. Things I don't even think about here might be red-flags somewhere else.
