Landscape and Memory - going deeper
« on: July 24, 2014, 05:12:45 pm »
I have just re-read Simon Schama's fabulous book 'Landscape and Memory' and like all books I love, would heartily recommend it to those interested in how history/religion/earth scape have deep intertwining influences. It's not an 'easy' book to get into but once you've cracked the surface it will repay the work put into reading it. As usual, Schama takes on on a winding trail of his own observations ( but complete with impeccable research) and you find yourself following along just to see what he sees. The book is divided into sections (wood, water, rock) and he takes those elements and ties them with history, religion and art in ways that had me going back in my mind to places I have been and re-thinking them. I especially loved his section on water (must be the Pisces in me :) ).

It is very much a European and North American book though his trip to Egypt and the Mid-East filsl in a lot of history that I for one was unaware of (and I'm a history fanatic).

If you want an idea of Schama, check out his history of Britain on youtube and you'll get a preview into how he thinks( Actually, it's one of the best potted histories of the U.K. I've seen).

Because he is such a scholar, one can disagree with him but never doubt his sincerity and the depth of his thoughts and ideas on how the landscape around us shapes, and is shaped, by our ideas and beliefs.
