Booze!
« on: June 25, 2014, 07:06:32 pm »
And more specifically, mixed drinks.

I got some Southern Comfort on a whim recently; I tried it with some club soda and it tasted like peaches and cough syrup, so not too bad. I think it would go well with mango juice or maybe ginger ale.

Anyone have any suggestions for summer-type mixed drinks?

Scotch.  Pour in a chilled glass.  Mix with a couple of ice cubes.  Done.

I have been drinking gin and tonics recently, partly because that way I do not end up with half-drunk bottles of wine around. (Which is more of an issue in the summer, when I'm not doing cooking that takes wine well as much.)

(My gin of choice is a regionally made Maine one, I ended up snagging Poland Springs tonic water, because I figured also locally made. There's a lot of variation in both gin and tonic water, and some don't go play nicely with each other: this particular combo does.)

My drink Monday was one part gin, three parts pomegranate juice, four parts tonic water, a bunch of ice, and an energetic squirt of lime juice. Very tart, and if I were being energetic about drink making, I might do mint or rosemary simple syrup with it, but I like tart drinks, and it was very refreshing.

My thing is lime rickeys.  (Aka "gin rickey", I believe.)  And/or Long Island Spiced Tea.  (Like Long Island Iced Tea only with spiced rum instead of plain.)  Or a dark and stormy (rum and ginger beer).

... really, I'm either all about the lime or all about the rum.

Rum and coke is my go to drink. Nothing says summer like alcohol with a pirate on the label!

Does that mean that 19 Sep is the last day of summer?

And to contribute to the summer drinks: orange (or tangerine) vodka with limeade.

Certainly not! It has got to be the height of summer! I had no idea this day existed until now, thank you! :D

My favourite spirit is gin - Hendrick's remains my #1, but Broker's is a nice cheap option. Bombay Sapphire is to be avoided if at all possible. Anyway, here's some of my favourite gin drinks:

'The Business' - Gin, fresh squeezed lime, honey. (Melt the honey first.) Add loads of ice. Minus the sweet stuff, add some soda is you're so inclined, and you have a gimlet!

Elderflower Martini - Gin, vermouth, St. Germain's.

The Cucumber G&T - this one is best with Hendricks. It's just gin and tonic with cucumber slices. SO refreshing.

Something Fancy - gin, sparkling wine, St. Germain's.

I also enjoy bourbon. My current favourite is Bulleit, as the price is decent and it's not like... old man tasting. So, bourbon cocktails:

Bourbon and lemonade. Exactly what it says.

Bourbon and Iced Tea. Good when you don't want something sweet - I had a great black tea blend that was divine, but of course I've forgotten where I got it.

Old Fashioned - bourbon, bitters, bit of sugar, citrus rind. (I like orange.)

Mint Julep - bourbon, sugar, mint, ice. You must fake a terrible southern accent while drinking it.

One I have NOT tried but am going to... The Thing That Dude at The Store Suugested: bourbon, small batch grenadine, lime and soda. Could be awful. I'll get back to you on that.

Assorted booze:

Dark and Stormy - spiced rum (The Kraken is THE BEST), ginger beer, and lime.

Vodka blush - I got the recipe for this on the Church of Satan's website. It remains one of my sister's favourites.

I own a travel bar, for the record.

Not a drink but if you get the urge to eat, a cherry bomb.

Take some cherries soak them in the liquor or spirit of your choice (at least overnight), put them in the freezer (longer than it takes to freeze water).  Eat straight from the freezer (do not defrost), as you are able.

I love making infused hooch, especially in the summer.  Moderately-priced gin infused with English cucumber.  Mid-range vodka infused with basil and black pepper.  Rum infused with cardamom and ginger.  Mix with ice and cold seltzer and a twist of lime.  Simple and delicious!

Pimms and lemonade or gin and tonic. Mmm, must make some summer drinks.

Forgot about gin & tonics-- that's a good summer sipper.  Gotta be careful though.  They're good & refreshing, but also sneaky.

For summer,  definitely cider. Magners&Bulmers pretty much depend on summer! The Kopparberg Mixed Fruit, and Strawberry&Lime is popular at the bar as well.....all year round, I like my dark ales and Whiskey. Guinness, Newcastle, e.t.c,, and Bushmills....

I just finished a fight last Sunday which I had to train 3 months for which included not drinking, so needless to say my summer and drinking just started ;)

I knew I liked you!  Gin is my go-to spirit.  I don't mind Sapphire, but I prefer Hendrick's.  My favorite thing to do is muddle cucumber with crushed ice, then pour Hendrick's over it.

I need to try all of these, clearly.  Must go to state store.

I'm also fond of the Negroni - equal parts gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari.  I like mine on the rocks.

This sounds incredibly awesome - I quite like elderflower as a flavor and it's hard to find here. (And St Germain's is way outside my price range right now, I looked it up). Got to see if the natural food store has elderflower syrup or something.
