First off: Who knew that we were such a bunch of boozers? I sense a useful theme to return to in six months, come the next solstice and Up All Night...

Second: It's easy enough to make your own sangria; here's the recipe I use, cribbed from somewhere on the Internet and modified over the years--

1 bottle red wine (a very inexpensive tempranillo will work perfectly)
½ cup OJ
¼ cup brandy
1 ½ to 2 Tbs sugar
Oranges, lemons, peaches, apples, pears, blueberries, strawberries…

Dissolve the sugar into the wine, mix in the other liquids, then cut up your choice of fruit (oranges, apples, and peaches are traditional, I believe) and dump them in. Let it sit at least overnight in the fridge for all the flavors to mellow together. The nice thing about making your own is you can alter the amount of brandy and sugar to determine the alcoholic strength and the sweetness, respectively, to your preference.

My other summer faves:

--Vodka tonic, with a healthy twist of lime: clean, crisp, cool, and refreshing

--Vodka lemonade: usually choosing a brand of lemonade that's not overly sweet

--Frozen margarita (with or without fruit): a blender, 4 shots tequila, 2 shots triple sec, frozen limeade concentrate, half a lime (peeled), chopped up strawberries or whatever (optional), and tons of ice. Blend. Imbibe.

Alright somehow I missed this entire post. My bad! Thanks for this, Altair. I'll have to try it out! Now just to find a red wine ...

I'm just happy to know I'm not the only lush on the board. Also: trying your sangria recipe ASAP.

I'm popping back in to report on the bourbon/grenadine/lime/club soda recipe passed on to me by the hipster at the overpriced twine store. The verdict is... Good! Very nice indeed!

Or if you can find it, a red Sancerre. It's one of the few reds meant to be served chilled. But since most Sancerres are white, it can be tough to put your hands on a bottle. Another of my summer faves, though.

Huh, never heard of it. *makes note.*

I'll second that! I made a jug of pink vodka lemonade for Beltane this year...I have no regrets.

I also enjoyed my first Irish Root Beer last night: 1 oz Irish Whiskey, 1/2 oz Bailey's Irish Cream, 1/2 oz Butterscotch Schnapps, 1/2 oz cream, 12 oz Root Beer.

Have you heard of the Scottisch Drambuie?

I can recommend it - summer or winter!

Yep.  Drambuie and blended Scotch make my brother's favorite drink - the Rusty Nail.

Thanx for the link! :)

I 'll try it out soon! :)

The Rusty Nail is the ultimate in Scotch cocktails and if you are interested in that style of whiskey, this is a drink you should be familiar with.

Traditionally, this classic cocktail is made with blended Scotch, though Glenlivet 15 year single malt is my Scotch of choice here. Experiment with different Scotches and add more or less Drambuie (a Scotch-based liqueur) to suit your tastes.

Where's the  smiley when you need it??  Drambuie is my drink of choice followed along with a blended scotch - neat.  Gotta be careful though, I like Drambuie a lot so I make sure I only pick up a bottle during the holidays.  The expense makes it easy to justify that way as a special item and I get to keep it as a special treat.

Honestly, I only meant to to check the Technopagan Up All Night Thread but somehow ended up here...

Ah, well, there will be synchronicity - I can drink one while attending the other!

I have heard of Drambuie :) My local store carries it; I've never tried it though. I did finally buy a bottle of Cointreau for all my orange-flavoring needs.
